Ethylene Monitoring System

Ethylene makes bean sprouts “fatter” by forcing the sprout cell wall to expand.  Some seed is more sensitive to ethylene than others.  Freshly harvested seed is usually not as sensitive as older seed.  Too much ethylene will damage the sprouts, such as brown rings, brown stripes, or split sides.

The ISS Ethylene Monitoring System Includes

  • A control timer, pressure regulator valve, flow meter, collar and strapping to attach the ethylene tank to the outside wall of your growing room, the inlet nozzle, and 15 feet of tubing.  (We will supply longer tubing if needed.)  The system comes ready to attach to your growing room.

  • Technical advice.

  • A Full one year warrantee.

Operating Principlesmung bean sprouts

The timer controls the release of the gas.  The ethylene gas then goes through the pressure regulator valve and flow meter.  The flow meter determines how many parts per million is released into the growing room.  Set the flow meter dial to the desired amount of ethylene to release.

Some adjustments will be needed to accommodate your growing room and how many sprouts are being grown.  This equipment does not “sense” the amount of ethylene in the growing room.  You determine whether to increase or decrease the ethylene needed by the results shown in your bean sprout crops.

Operational Requirements

In order for this system to work properly:

  • The growing room must be fairly air tight

  • The growing room needs a ventilation exhaust fan on a timer

  • The system should be located in a sheltered area outside your growing room

  • You need a source for Research Grade (RG – 99% pure) ethylene gas, usually supplied in 100-lb. tanks.  [Check with your local specialty gas supplier for cost and deposit information.]
