Ethylene Monitoring System Ethylene makes bean sprouts “fatter” by forcing the sprout cell wall to expand. Some seed is more sensitive to ethylene than others. Freshly harvested seed is usually not as sensitive as older seed. Too much ethylene will damage the sprouts, such as brown rings, brown stripes, or split sides. Operating Principles The timer controls the release of the gas. The ethylene gas then goes through the pressure regulator valve and flow meter. The flow meter determines how many parts per million is released into the growing room. Set the flow meter dial to the desired amount of ethylene to release. Some adjustments will be needed to accommodate your growing room and how many sprouts are being grown. This equipment does not “sense” the amount of ethylene in the growing room. You determine whether to increase or decrease the ethylene needed by the results shown in your bean sprout crops. Operational Requirements In order for this system to work properly:
